Abigail Zwerner Shot by a Six Year Old Student

I wanted to wait for things to cool off before I posted this one, mainly because I'm looking for real answers instead of the emotional responses that were provoked after it happened.

From Wikipedia, because this is old news and by now Wikipedia is as good as anything else. The quotes have been edited by yours truly for clarity, accuracy, and brevity.

On January 6, 2023, the American school teacher Abby Zwerner was shot by a six-year-old male student at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia.

The pistol, a 9mm Taurus Armas G2A, belonged to the shooter's mother. He smuggled it into school in his backpack, then moved it to his waistband.

Because of his age (six years old when the crime was committed) his name hasn't been revealed.

Several news sources state that he is currently living with his great grandfather.

A few things I found interesting about the shooting are:

  • The 9mm Taurus Armas G2A is an autoloader with a double action, single action trigger and a manual safety or thumb safety. Unlike any revolver, you have to know how to use it. As we all know, put one in the chamber and take it off safety. You're ready to go.
  • The shooter tried for more than one shot, but due to a lack of hand strength or Divine intervention, the pistol stovepiped on the first shot and the shooter couldn't clear the jam.
  • The shooter had a history of violence, and had been expelled once the year before due to violent behavior.

So after the smoke cleared, the mother is in the hoosegow for three years and change. Nothing is said about the father who may not be in the picture at all.

Abigail Zwerner sued the school and was awarded ten million simoleons. That's a piece of change, but it would have been more is she were black and the shooter was white.

My question is: What should be done with a six year old shooter?
