The Proof is in The Shooting

Or not, as the case may be.  Cutting to the chase, I posted a brief, opinionated essay entitled  Packing Heat, and got a lecture on societal norms and morals from Glen Filthie.  Naturally I suggested that Glen go boil his head, but upon reflection I think my northern neighbor may have an insight worth listening to.

Consider these two bits of news from commercial media.  Be aware that my opinion is not modified to accommodate SJWs, special little snowflakes, anti-freedom liberals of any stripe, or weak-kneed, bull-dyke fearing, door knob sucking douche nozzles.

Consider the following article:

Bond Set at $1 Million For Suspect Charged in North Columbus Deadly Shooting

From the article:

Police said a call came in around 5 a.m. for shots fired at The Trails at Arbor Court apartment complex on Belcher Drive. Officers searched the area but didn't find anything.

Just before 8:15 a.m., another call came in for a report of a dead body. Officers found an unresponsive man, later identified as 24-year-old Yahya Mohamed. He was pronounced dead at 8:19 a.m.

Police arrested 19-year-old Jevin Campbell in connection to the shooting. Campbell is charged with murder.

Police said that during an investigation, it was determined that Campbell intervened in the theft of a vehicle when Mohamed was shot.

During court on Friday, a Franklin County prosecutor said "He (Campbell) witnessed a female neighbor in an altercation with a John Doe over an attempted theft of a motor vehicle. Mr. Campbell, the defendant, intervened. When the John Doe fled, the defendant gave chase. He produced a pistol and fired multiple shots at John Doe, striking him, causing his death."

Emphasis mine.  So, if I may be so bold as to encapsulate, and given that it's my blog I may, around 4:30 in the morning Campbell is awakened by a fracas in the street.  He hauls on britches and shoes, and once outside he finds his neighbor arguing with a muzzie over her  auto ownership.  He pulls his gat, the muzzie beats feet, and Campbell dings him.  I have no problem with this.  If you want to remain free of bullet holes, don't steal stuff.

However-comma.

The Columbus PD have a major hard spot with this kind of behavior, and after the neighbor tells them what happened, they arrest poor Campbell and throw him in the sneezer to rot.  What they should have done is congratulated Campbell and let everything settle down to a normal roar - but they didn't, and that is just plain wrong.

Yes, I think it's okay to shoot thieves.  Why not?

Now I'll head down to Texas, where people have been known to pack their gat and use it as the occasion demands.

Grand Jury Declines to File Charges Against Man who Killed Robber at Texas Restaurant

From the article:

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A grand jury declined to file charges against the man who shot and killed a robber at a southwest Houston taqueria last year.

The shooting happened on Jan. 5, 2023, at the El Ranchito taqueria on South Gessner Road.

Eric Eugene Washington, 30, was shot and killed as he walked through the restaurant robbing people, according to police.

They got this whole thing on video.  A man walks through the restaurant with a handgun, holding the customers up.  As he walks past Our Hero, he gets ventilated.

My hard spot with this is that the cops should have congratulated the shooter on doing a good deed, taken statements from everyone concerned, cleaned up the mess, and called it a day.  They didn't, and this is Texas where I would think that when such things as a clearly justifiable shooting happens, the cops would be more inclined to offer the shooter a shot of whiskey to settle his nerves rather than arresting him.  Fortunately the members of the grand jury saw it differently - one year later.

Again, I think it's okay to shoot thieves.  Why not?

These two examples prove that Glen Filthie was right.  Society has changed, and not for the better.  I haven't changed with it, which is not a bad thing in my own estimation, but it may be deuced inconvenient both for me and the powers that be.

Thanks for reading.

I shouldn’t have lectured anyone, Jack. But as you note, our world has changed. The world we knew is gone.

Jo-Anne: That's good to hear. We in the mid-west are curious about the land down under and how life is going for folks.

Dr. Filthie: Go ahead and lecture. The worst thing that can happen to you is a barrage of eggs that will knock you off your soap box. Well, my soap box, this being my blog and all.

Yes, times have changed, and I'm not sure I want to keep up.
