RFI: Shooting, With One at Room Temperature

Request For Information: Shooting!

By now everyone who isn't a hermit in Alaska, which I wish I was, has heard about the shooting in Atlanta, Georgia.

I have a few questions about the shooting and the fallout.

In summary, Officer Garrett Rolfe shot 27-year-old Rayshard Brooks.  The second officer at the scene, Devin Brosnan, didn't shoot anyone during that particular event.

In a little more detail, on Friday, June 12th, 2020, officer Garrett Rolfe and officer Devin Brosnan were summoned to a Wendy's drive-thru around 10:30 p.m. because Rayshard Brooks had fallen asleep in his vehicle.  The two officers woke Brooks up.

In sequence, Rayshard Brooks failed a sobriety test, struggled with police when they tried to cuff him, wrestled a Taser away from one of the two officers, ran away from the officers in an effort to escape, and shot the Taser at police as he ran.

Officer Garrett Rolfe stopped running, assumed a shooting stance, and discharged his sidearm, striking Rayshard Brooks twice in the back.

Brooks expired quietly after undergoing surgery at a nearby hospital.

The local ME said Brooks suffered two gunshot wounds to his back and listed his cause of death as a homicide.

Rolfe was fired from the department and Brosnan was placed on administrative duty.

Note: The powers that be point out that the officer's Taser had been fired twice and no longer presented a threat, being empty.

Question 1: Was this shooting justified?  Why or why not?

Question 2: Why are the police in Atlanta pissed off about this incident?

I dunno Jack.

All I know is that there’s only two things that keep people on the straight and narrow path: fear, and common sense. If that boy was capable of common sense, he wouldn’t have been where he was, in the condition he was in. He sure as hell wouldn’t have started fighting with the cops. If we start telling these idiots that they can beat the stuffing out of our cops with impunity, we remove the fear factor as well... and we are all in for a world of hurt.

My question would be, what if that buck stole the cop’s gun instead of his taser? Would he have fired that too?

Remember the Dirty Harry movie where Harry Callahan says something to the effect that in all the excitement he lost count?
